Controlled Goods in Industry

Controlled GoodsA Canadian Company that performs work for private and government organizations in Canada and the United States is required to handle materials that are listed in both the Canadian Export Control List and the U.S. International Trade in Arms Regulations (ITAR). These are items that may or may not have a military application but are considered a threat to national security if they should fall into the hands of unfriendly powers.

A Canadian company had previously registered with the Canadian Controlled Goods Directorate. This allows it to legally handle controlled material. It also put an onus on them to secure their site and processes.

The company was concerned about a new project that would see material shipped from the United States into Canada. The material and technology for this project was subject to special conditions. The company contacted Avidaid to help assess their current security situation and to make recommendations.

Although Avidaid does not provide legal opinions and works with lawyers specializing in the security field when a legal opinion is required, we can review regulations and offer guidance in meeting them.

Avidaid conducted a thorough threat & risk assessment of the company's facilities, pointing out many discrepancies that had not been previously considered. We then helped them modify their security plan and implement new procedures to safeguard the controlled materials.

Due to confidentiality, Avidaid is unable to name this client.
