Controlled Goods in Universities
A Major Canadian University that conducts research projects in partnership with private industry needed a security plan that would meet the requirements of the Canadian
Controlled Goods Directorate and protect sensitive materials that were subject to both the Canadian Controlled Export List and the U.S. International trade in Arms Regulations (ITAR). These are items that may or may not have a military application but are considered a threat to national security if they should fall into the hands of unfriendly powers.
The company had previously registered with the Canadian Controlled Goods Directorate but had failed an audit due to an inadequate security plan.
The university contacted Avidaid to help assess their current security situation and to make recommendations.
Although Avidaid does not provide legal opinions and works with lawyers specializing in the security field when a legal opinion is required, we can review regulations and offer guidance in meeting them.
Avidaid conducted a thorough threat & risk assessment of the university's facilities, pointing out many discrepancies that had not been previously considered. In coordination with the designated official, we wrote a new security plan that took into account the unique needs of a university with professors and students who were both Canadian and foreign citizens.
